Blockchain, originally block chain, is a database, that consists of a growing list of digital records (also called blocks), that are linked using a certain type of cryptography (crypto). The name comes from its structure. By design, a blockchain is resistant to modification of the data.

It can be explained as "an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and in a permanent way". Blockchains are used for recording transactions in a database made with cryptocurrencies such as the most famous blockchain currency Bitcoin (BTC) and have many other applications.

Blockchain and Bitcoin were invented by a person (or group of people) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008 to serve as the public transaction ledger of the cryptocurrency bitcoin. Blockchain is the technology that underpins Bitcoin and it was developed specifically for Bitcoin. So, Bitcoin was the first example of blockchain in action and without blockchain, it would not be possible to have Bitcoin. ... So although Bitcoin uses blockchain technology to trade digital currency, blockchain is more than just Bitcoin. Other coins are called altcoins, successful Altcoins with a large market cap are Ethereum, XRP Ripple, Crypto CRO, etc.

Currently, several online ecosystems are available to manage the purchase, trade or sales of cryptocurrencies. They often provide a wallet, cryptocurrency exchange, and payment methods supporting Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, CRO, MCO, Binance, and other coins. They also provide Bitcoin data charts, stats, and market information.

To buy cryptocurrencies, you'll need a “wallet,” an online app that can hold your currency. Generally, you create an account on an exchange, and then you can transfer real money to buy cryptocurrencies.
