What are important items to prepare for home study? An easy way to start with home study is to provide the following important household items before you start!

Many of the common items needed for your adoption home study are listed in this checklist, but only as examples of what a home study provider might ask for. A detailed list of the things you'll need for your home study to meet state requirements and child-placing agency standards can be given to you by your home study social worker.

After reading this list, do not try to purchase these things or sign up for parenting-related classes. You will receive specific preparation instructions from your home study provider and child placement agency. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the organization or your home study social worker. This checklist should be used as an example of common (household) items and regulations required for an approved home study:

Home Study Document Checklist Copies of:

  • Self-referential statement 
  • Driving licenses
  • Marriage certificate if applicable
  • Divorce decree(s) if applicable
  • Verification of employment (most recent pay stub or letter from your employer) or non-working spouse statement
  • Passport(s) if adopting internationally Green card(s)
  • Military discharge(s) if applicable Latest income tax return 
  • Reference letters
  • Medical report/physician statement(s) 
  • Proof of insurance: home, health, life, auto Financial information
  • Disciplinary statement Pet vaccination records
  • Adoption Decree(s) if applicable
Clearances
  • Criminal background check
  • If you have a criminal background, such as a DUI, you may need to provide documentation about the arrest, penalties paid, probation completed and treatment classes.
  • Child abuse and neglect clearances for every state/country you have lived in for at least the past 5 years
  • If you are completing an international home study, you will need a child abuse and neglect clearance for every state/country you have lived in since age 18.
  • FBI clearance
  • Sex offender clearance 
  • Other state specific checks

Household Items and Considerations that may be required by your state or placing agency/agent:

  • Working smoke detectors (on every floor and near or in child’s room)
  • Medications, vitamins, cleaning products, and other potentially toxic substances in a locked container or on a shelf above the reach of children
  • First-aid kit
