How do I write a FOIA request? Why do FOIA requests get denied?

When you want to send in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request letter to US Government public official or agency, for example, to receive a copy of documents to determine your status to access fees, related to open records. When you send a request, make sure to keep a copy of your request.

Request FOIA Letter

Dear Mr./Mrs. Name,

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request copies of the following records or all records containing the following information:

IDENTIFY RECORDS OR INFORMATION
ATTACH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
INCLUDE ARGUMENTS FOR RELEASE, IF APPLICABLE.}}
INSERT REQUESTER DESCRIPTION, for example:

an individual seeking information for personal use and not for commercial use.
a representative of the news media affiliated with the newspaper/magazine/television station/Web site/etc., and this request is made as part of news gathering activity and not for commercial use.
affiliated with an educational or noncommercial scientific institution, and this request is made for a scholarly or scientific purpose and not for commercial use.
affiliated with corporation and seeking information for the company's business...

An FOIA requests gets denied if the bureau or office that is the custodian of the records determines that there is no match in documents available, that correspond with your request. In that case, you will receive a negative response, that there is no file in record available.
