that will hopefully make it easier to check off these details, so you can focus on the most important thing
– your little bundle of love.
Obtain a Birth Certificate for Your Child – Many hospitals will help you apply for the birth certifi-
cate during your stay. If yours doesn’t, or you had a midwife or birthed at home, you can obtain a
birth certificate by completing an application on the Service Canada website.

benefits to individuals who are expecting and having a baby. You can apply for maternity or
paternity leave on the Service Canada website.

Ensure You Received a Statement of Live Birth From the Hospital or the Midwife – All provinces
require that a statement of live birth is filed. This form should come from your hospital or midwife.

apply once and your eligibility is determined each year through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
You will require the social insurance number of both parents for the application.

province.

Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for Your Child – Applying for your child’s social insurance
number early is easily done though the Service Canada website. You’ll need a copy of the child’s
birth certificate and the SIN numbers of the parents. You will need a SIN number for your child to
open an RESP. You can apply for a SIN online.

Get a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for Your Child – Investing in an RESP is a great
step in saving for your child’s education. The Federal government will contribute 20% a year (up to a
max of $500 per year) of your contribution until your child is 18 years old (max: $7200). Opening an
RESP also will trigger the Canada Education Savings Program that awards a grant to families based
on the amount contributed to an RESP for the child. The CESG money will be deposited directly into
the child’s RESP. For more information on how to open an RESP for your child, and the Canada Sav-
ings Program, visit the Canada Revenue Website.
