Animal Book Report
Criteria/Checklist
Due: Wednesday, March 15, 2107
Project Goal: Students will be able to create an informative lapbook about an animal they choose
to research. Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding by presenting their project in
class.
Common Core State Standards:
Science- 2.LS2-3(MA): Develop and use models to compare how plants and animals depend on
their surroundings and other living things to meet their needs in the places they live.
ELA- W.2.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and
definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
ELA- W.2.7: Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on
a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
ELA- SL.2.2: Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information
presented orally or through other media.
First Steps:
1.) Choose an animal you would like to study
2.) Use resources to learn about the animal (don’t forget to record the names of the resources you use)
You will need:
-Standard size manila file folder (provided by teachers)
-Templates to write the information on (provided by teachers)
-At least 2 different books or other resources to learn about the animal you choose to research.
You must use one book and one additional resource of your choice (ex. Newspaper,
magazine, article from the internet)
Helpful Hints:
-There will be an example of the project available for everyone to view on our Grade 2 website

-Preview everything you will have to include in your lapbook before you research.
-Take notes while you are researching.
Your animal project should include…
_____your full name.
_____your manila folder folded into a lapbook.
_____all of the information pieces pasted onto the lapbook using glue.
_____all of the components filled out with the appropriate facts.
_____all pictures drawn out by hand. (no pictures from the internet)
_____the information written in your own words.
_____the information written neatly.
_____correct spelling and punctuation.
