Re: Software Engineering Exam Development
At their August 2009 meeting, the National Council for Examiners of
Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Board of Directors approved moving
forward with the development of a Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE)
exam for the discipline of SOFTWARE ENGINEERING. As part of the
Board action, it was agreed that IEEE-USA will serve as the lead technical
society sponsoring the examination with cooperative agreements from other
organizations, including the IEEE-Computer Society, the National Society of
Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the Texas Board of Professional Engineers
(TBPE).
This is a new PE exam; the first one developed from the ground up for a ‘new’
discipline in quite a long time. The next step is the organization of the
individuals and committees necessary for exam development. The exam
committee members and item writers for PE exams come from the community
of software engineering practitioners. This is where you come in.
The TBPE has recognized Software Engineering as a distinct and licensable
branch of engineering since 1998. As part of our leadership role, we are
inviting any and all qualified and interested Professional Engineers to assist this
important effort.
We are looking for volunteers in three areas: Exam Committee Chair, Vice-
Chair, and Committee Members. The necessary qualifications, time
commitment, and duties are included as an attachment to this document. Since
this a new exam committee, we need dedicated and highly qualified individuals
with proven technical and leadership experience. Experience with exam
development or item writing would be a plus.
If you are interested, please email or send a paper copy of your most recent
resume/CV and the NCEES Bio-Data Sheet to the Texas Board at the contact
information below. The TBPE liaison will review the qualifications and make
nominations to the Software Engineering Steering Committee and NCEES. The
deadline for submitting applications for the committee is Friday, October 30,
2009.
