Reflective Expository Essay
In this class, we have read a variety of essays that we could classify as reflective expository essays. An
expository essay is one that explains something, and a reflective essay is a personal essay that
shares an experience (or series of experiences) while also providing insightful commentary about the
significance of the experience. The experience you choose to write about does not need to be one that
is obviously momentous; even seemingly-mundane experiences can provide a wealth of material upon
which to reflect. Remember, Thoreau wrote the equivalent of a reflective expository essay about an
experience he had watching ants outside of his cabin.
