The Award
The Award is divided into seven units that cover the fundamental areas of dance
leadership and are relevant to a wide variety of dance and recreational activities. The Award is
designed to give candidates a range of skills that will enable them to deliver the requirement
of unit one, Leadership skills for a dance leader. In this unit, candidates for the Award should
lead a minimum of ten hours of dance activity of which they have been the sole planner and
organiser. A qualied dance teacher or youth worker will closely supervise each session.
The Units:
1. Leadership skills for a dance leader
This unit addresses the skills, qualities and values that a dance leader will need. Also builds up
their condence in communicating and motivating eectively.
2. Adapting dance sessions to be inclusive
Your learners will learn the principles of leading inclusive activities by learning how to adapt
sessions to suit the needs of the participants.
3. Safeguarding dance participants
Your learners will understand safeguarding participants
in dance sessions and the importance of this. This unit
also addresses legal and ethical responsibilities.
4. Plan, lead and evaluate dance sessions
This unit will provide learners with a practical overview
of the factors that should be considered when planning
and leading a dance session. Learners must also com-
plete ten hours demonstration of leadership within the
Approved Assessment Centre or within the community
as part of this unit
5. Assist in organising and leading a dance event
Learners will learn about the organisation and delivery of dance event or competition. This will
include planning the format and delivering the event or competition.
6. Use of movement and music in dance choreography
The aim of this unit is for learners to create varied dance pieces which are based upon either a
specic style of dance or a creative art form and to understand what rhythm is.
7. Pathways in dance
Learners will learn about how sport and recreation is organised; both on a local and regional
scale. Plus, the learners will be able to identify career pathways.
