How do you write a good briefing note?

When creating a briefing note, place the word centered at the top, followed by a To line, a From line, a Dateline, a Subject line, and then the actual body of the message. Briefing notes are amongst the most crucial and important strategic communication tools, mostly used in governmental organizations and help with making decisions in specific policies, projects or programs and updating stakeholders on the situation.

All briefing notes will have elements of the following structure:

  • Briefing Note for group;
  • Subject;
  • Purpose:
  • Summary;
  • Background;
  • Follow up plan.

The primary motive behind briefing notes is to elaborate information to a specific board or management group.

A few other ways in which memos are used are:
  • To recount an event or piece of information;
  • To send a reminder;
  • To pass or circulate information;
  • To highlight an event;
  • To keep an official record of anything.
